With a deep frown between her brows, Deirdre stared into what would be her sixth cup of coffee that morning and shook her head. Her hand was twitching - again, she noticed with some concern. Apparently, her habit of spending her nights poring over books, articles, files and whatnot was starting to severely endanger her health – she needed to start getting proper sleep. Or else stay awake doing something that would require less effort from her brain cells, like playing poker or... no, actually, she’d better just sleep.
Draining the cup in one long swallow, she shifted the heavy file under her arm and obligingly made her way to Levin's office for the scheduled meeting, now wondering if she should have cared to come dressed in a suit instead of her usual laid-back uniform of jeans-and-trench coat. The main reason she was there that morning, after all, was to be introduced to whatever-his-or-her-name the field agent, and first impressions were important – or, at least, that was what they made you believe. But, then again, she had been assigned three cases the previous evening, and had less than twenty-four hours to study several hundred-page files. She didn’t really have time to bother herself with clothing, did she now?
With a single, curt knock, she pushed through the door and stepped inside the too-neat office at last, nodding just as shortly to the grey-haired wizard behind the desk.
"I still think you’re too young, Montgomery," Levin greeted her in his usual less-than-pleasant tone. "But, unfortunately, I was not the one to make this call."
Finding herself unable to come up with a polite-enough response, Deirdre just smiled tightly at him.
"I hope you'll be able meet the Department's expectations," he continued. "Preferably without bothering me at home." His sharp eyes surveyed her closely and then moved to the door. The also-too-young field agent should be there shortly. Merlin be damned, they were filling the DMLE with kids barely out of their nappies.
